LizardTech’s MrSID® Generation 3 Format Now Supported in ESRI’s ArcPad 7

SEATTLE, Wash., – Dec. 12, 2005 - LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, announced today the company’s MrSID Generation 3 image compression format (MG3) is supported in ESRI’s ArcPad 7, making it even easier to view high quality geospatial raster imagery on handheld devices.

“Customers who store their imagery on their local network and use it in the field will benefit significantly from the integration of MG3 with ArcPad,” said Jon Skiffington, product manager at LizardTech. “In the past, customers had their imagery stored in MG3‘s lossless format for easy manipulation later, but in order to use the imagery in ArcPad, the imagery would have to be converted to MG2‘s lossy format. Now these users will be able to use MG3 imagery out in the field without spending valuable time converting back to older lossy formats.”

ArcPad provides field-based personnel with the ability to capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display geographic information. Now with the MG3 implementation, ArcPad users can take advantage of GeoExpress’ image compression functionality to quickly repurpose an image for use on a handheld device. The ability to reproject and compress the images at differing compression ratios within the same mosaic is a significant advantage over any other geospatial image compression format. This feature will enable broader use of the imagery by remote field users and first responders in areas where remote access to geospatial imagery is critical.

“The benefits of the integration of MG3 with ArcPad are significant,” said Tom Patterson, Deputy Fire Management Officer at BLM. “Right away I noticed a substantial performance increase, what used to take 5-7 seconds to refresh an image in MG2 now takes a staggering 2 seconds in MG3! In addition to saving a lot of time, I can now crop and do multi-resolution mosaicking which allows us to easily combine aerial photos from different resolutions into one file.”

Additionally, the integration of MrSID with ArcPad benefits the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) image users. The flexibility and functionality that MG3 provides particularly for those using NAIP imagery are significant. With NAIP’s compressed county image mosaics being delivered in MG3 format, customers no longer have to double up their data by converting to MG2to use it in ArcPad.

Another LizardTech product, Express Server, has also been recently integrated with ESRI’s ArcIMS. With ArcPad supporting MG3, users can keep their imagery in one place and in one format, and access it over the web in ArcIMS, locally via ArcMap, and remotely using ArcPad.

LizardTech and Realview Technologies Team Up With North American Publishing Company (NAPCO) to Deliver Magazines Online

Exact Digital Replicas of NAPCO’s Magazines Now Available Online Thanks to LizardTech’s DjVu® Document Format

SEATTLE, Wash. – November 16, 2005 - LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, teamed up with technology partner Realview to transform NAPCO’s hard copy magazines into digital replicas online thanks to LizardTech’s DjVu document format and Realview’s Online Publishing Solution.

With LizardTech’s groundbreaking DjVu technology, originally developed in AT&T Research Labs, readers of magazines such as Printing Impressions, BookTech, E-Gear and other NAPCO print publications will now be able to receive digital replicas of their favorite magazine, with the same layout as the print edition, featuring all the editorial content, colorful images and advertisements. In addition, the digital edition of the magazines will include hyperlinks to Web sites mentioned throughout the magazine giving readers immediate access to additional advertiser offers and information, the latest news and more.

The Internet has groomed many people to a standard of immediate access to fresh information-a standard that the long lead times and distribution make it increasingly difficult for print publications to meet. That’s why we’re excited to fulfill NAPCO’s desire to provide digital replicas of their magazines to their readers,” said Carlos Domingo, CEO and president of Celartem, Inc. “As the cost of print production and distribution continue to climb, DjVu stands out as the most efficient and cost effective solution for delivering exact digital replicas of print publications such as newspapers and magazines to readers.

We are delighted to work with LizardTech and Realview and believe that this cutting-edge digital publication solution will further enhance our products and services for our 300,000 subscribers and 20,000 advertisers,” said Ned Borowsky, president of NAPCO. “As NAPCO’s subscriber base continues to achieve rapid growth, we needed a solution that would enable us to reduce our production and distribution costs without compromising the quality of our magazines. The LizardTech and Realview publishing solution allows us to deliver our publications to our subscribers electronically with all the same characteristics as its printed counterpart.

The benefits of using LizardTech’s DjVu technology are significant. Publishers are able to convert their current print issues to DjVu format from pre-press PDFs as well as by scanning past print issues, resulting in dramatically small file sizes – anywhere from 10 to 100 times smaller than alternative formats like PDF or JPEG. DjVu digital replicas preserve the stunning visual quality of the print edition and are enhanced with multimedia features like ability to search by keyword within the pages (even within scanned documents thanks to OCR support for over 100 languages), hyperlinks, e-mail addresses, page spills and more. In addition, unlike HTML and online content, distribution of most digital editions can be counted as audited circulation, increasing the publication’s ability to expand its reach nationally or internationally, thereby boosting advertising revenue.

All 14 NAPCO-published magazines will become available in digital form by early 2006. Subscribers to NAPCO’s magazines will receive digital magazines via email each month. Learn more about Document Express with DjVu here. Download the free DjVu Browser Plug-in here.

LizardTech Releases GeoExpress 5.0 Software Development Kit (SDK)

GeoExpress SDK Offers Unlimited Encoding Capabilities to Both MrSID® and JPEG 2000

SEATTLE, Wash. – June 14, 2005 - LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions that make it significantly easier to manage and distribute digital content such as aerial photography, satellite imagery and scanned color documents, today announced the release of GeoExpress 5.0 SDK. This latest release of the SDK offers unlimited encoding capabilities to both MrSID and JPEG 2000 and exposes functionality contained in the GeoExpress 5.0 standalone product including JPEG 2000 encoding, NPJE/EPJE profiles, support for WKT-based spatial reference system metadata, and area of interest encoding of imagery to MrSID Generation 3 (MG3) as well as JPEG 2000.

With direct access to both JPEG 2000 and MrSID unlimited encoding, users will realize a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for storage and delivery of massive imagery, as well as have the opportunity to create complimentary GIS imagery products by leveraging functionality previously limited to the GeoExpress standalone product.

“We feel that providing programmatic access to unlimited encoding and associated image management tools is a natural extension of LizardTech’s already robust GeoExpress platform of products,” said Dan Sarlitto, LizardTech’s senior product manager for Geospatial products. Sarlitto added, “There are thousands of LizardTech customers who have benefited from our innovation in efficient wavelet-based image compression over the years, now there will be thousands more in the developer community who can benefit from GeoExpress 5.0 SDK.”

GeoExpress SDK is the industry’s only encoding solution that offers the benefits of both MrSID technology and ISO standard JPEG 2000 without any compromise in the quality of imagery and without requiring developers to change their applications, production processes or hardware configurations. Furthermore, LizardTech’s SDK and associated plug-in viewers are available in a variety of options and can be downloaded directly from LizardTech’s Web site here.
