LizardTech GeoViewer 3.0 now available free
May 27th, 2009 by Matt FleagleWe’ve just released our new viewer, LizardTech GeoViewer 3.0, and so far it’s flying off the shelf, or rather across the Internet. It’s free to download here (http://www.lizardtech.com) and we’ve had thousands of takers already. We issued a press release yesterday, and I was going to follow up with an announcement here, but the way things are going it’ll be old news by the time I hit “publish”.

Geospatial professionals have been asking us for a new viewer for a long time, and we were finally able to devote some time to making one. We didn’t want to short-change it, and I think you’ll love the results if you’re a person who uses imagery every day.
For input GeoViewer supports too many raster formats to list here, plus ESRI Shapefiles. It exports to GeoTIFF, JPEG, and PNG. What’s more, you can add layers (images and vector overlays) from local repositories, from a LizardTech Express Server catalog, or from WMS or JPIP servers.
Best of all, you can group your layers and hide or show them, so you can visually compare years, or regions — or any other organizational units you care to create — with a click.
We put a lot of care into making GeoViewer easy to install and get started with. If you haven’t already grabbed yours, why not try it out? And let us know what you think.

Hi, thank you for your posts and news. I always read them in fact I’m subscribed. Regarding the Geoviewer 3.0, Lizardtech’s download point us to a 669kb setup.exe, and after running it, connects to a server to download and install the rest of the software. Is there any way download the whole installation file? this is because I would like to install it to other partners on the company and the server’s proxy does not allow to execute and install in the way it-s been done currently. So an offline complete version link will be highly desirable or if this is not possible, to let us know the temp download directory so we can be alert when finish to copy the whole downloaded files.
Another suggestions for future releases could be:
1) Check for updates and
2) Also to translate it to spanish, like other lizardtech’s viewer in the past.
Thanks in advance for your comments

Martin,
There’s currently no way to download the whole installation and pass it around. However, contact support (http://www.lizardtech.com/support) and we can send you a CD, which should answer your needs if I understand them correctly. However, note that you cannot avail yourself of the automatic check for new versions when you install from CD.
As for your other suggestions:
GeoViewer already does have an automatic check for updates, as I just mentioned. With the web downloaded version, you can set GeoViewer to prompt you to check for updates at a desired interval, and the check is a single click. If there’s a new version available, downloading and installing it is also a single click.
Currently we offer GeoViewer only in U.S. English, but thanks for your request. We might offer localized versions in the future.
Happy viewing!
Matt
Matt,
Thank you for your comments. I really appreciate them.
Now, another feedback on GeoViewer 3.0 for future releases is…
After saving, closing and reopen a *.gvp project file, GeoVoewer does not keep the exact location (scale view) where it was saved.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the feedback. I’ve passed it on to our product manager and we’ll definitely add it to the list of possible features to include next round.
Cheers,
Matt
