Letter from LizardTech CEO, Carlos Domingo

Carlos Domingo, LizardTech's CEO, discusses the recent merger of LizardTech with Extensis into Celartem US, the integration of MrSID with Oracle® Spatial 10g GeoRaster architecture, and an exciting new partnership with Avision establishing a robust presence for LizardTech in the Asia Pacific region.

GeoExpress 5.0 with MrSID®

Did you know that by popular demand, GeoExpress is now available with unlimited encoding capabilities in addition to all of the powerful new image management tools? As always, operations performed on existing MrSID images do not count against encode allotment in any edition of GeoExpress.

GeoExpress 5.0 receives rave reviews!

Directions Magazine editor Joe Francica notes in the February issue, "The product [GeoExpress 5.0] performed as stated in the documentation and the processing time on a 70 megabyte image to isolate an area compressed to 3 megabytes was relatively speedy with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 processor." Joe continues to say, "The preview and crop features were excellent and the user interface to perform the necessary encoding options was straightforward."

Russ Martin, President, Ascent GIS, Inc. said, "After testing the beta version of GeoExpress 5.0, I noticed the substantial amount of image managing tools included." Russ continues, "It [MrSID] is not just a compression utility any more."

JPEG 2000 is coming on strong. Many vendors are investigating its use and some already support the standard. Learn more in Earth Imaging Journal.

Look for the MacOSX MrSID Plug-in later this spring. Fast and fully integrated with MacOSX, the plug-in will enable viewing capabilities of MrSID imagery on the MacOSX platform.

LizardTech and Galdos Systems, Inc. have submitted to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) a draft specification "GML in JPEG 2000 for Geographic Imagery". The proposed specification addresses the uses of GML within JPEG 2000, application schemas for the encoding of GML layers within JPEG 2000, and packaging mechanisms for incorporating GML within JPEG 2000.

GeoExpress Resellers

From the GeoExpress Reseller Channel, the year started off January 10th with product rollout training via our Webinar program. The turnout for the three Webinars we hosted was very high and we were quite happy with the feedback received from our reseller channel since we rolled out the Geo 5.0 product through this vehicle. Those resellers who participated were sent their initial launch kit information for 5.0 as well as other handout materials. The few resellers who were not able to participate in the Webinar program have been included in our direct meeting efforts, which started in middle to late January.

Below is a breakdown of participation for the Geo Reseller Webinar program:

  • Jan. 10 Webinar - 30 North American (N.A.) resellers attended with a total of 40 logins

  • Jan. 11 Webinar - 5 N.A. resellers attended with a total of 17 logins

  • Jan. 12 Webinar - 17 N.A. resellers attended with a total of 32 logins

Since the rollout of GeoExpress 5.0, we have added a few new resellers to our channel program in some strategic geographic areas. They are as follows:

  • Ecology & Environment - Buffalo, NY

  • E3Synergy - Baltimore, MD

  • CADD Microsystems - Alexandria, VA

  • Source Graphics - Anaheim, CA

  • Digital Data Services - Lakewood, CO

We also have another handful of new prospective Geo resellers who are currently weighing their options to join our reseller network, and we're anticipating filling in some gaps of coverage with the next couple companies that sign up.

Express Server 5.0

The ArcIMS 9 Integration Toolkit for Express Server, released in February, integrates with existing installations of ArcIMS 9 (version 4.x also supported). The toolkit enables image data requested from the Express Server to be served by ArcIMS directly while minimizing the load on ArcIMS services. LizardTech provides this FREE toolkit to enable ESRI customers to RAPIDLY access massive amounts of imagery across their network.

Document Express 5.1 with DjVu®

LizardTech recently released three new Document Express products:

The first, a 5.1 release of our Document Express Enterprise product with significant improvements to the GUI, was released February 5.

Next, our new Captiva Module, designed to work seamlessly within the Captiva Input Accel software and IA Express, gives the Captiva customers the ability to create DjVu files from within the hosting software using Document Express Tools. This module became available through Authorized Document Express Resellers on February 1st.

Finally, in conjunction with the KOFAX Transform Conference in March we are releasing our Document Express Module for Kofax Ascent Capture. Like the Captiva Module, the Kofax Module is designed to work seamlessly within the host software - in this case Kofax Ascent Capture.

These two modules complete our BIG three module product line-up. Our third module ships on every copy of Kodak Scan and Capture software.

In May look for a new release of our FREE DjVu Browser Plug-in that will allow users to view pages in a double-page spread and view our new annotations.

Also in May, the Professional Editor version of Document Express will have a new release with double-page spread capabilities and a new set of annotations allowing customers to make visible and concealed notes on DjVu pages along with the current annotation functions for highlighting and adding hyperlinks.

LizardTech and Document Express were featured in the January issue of Press Time Magazine in an interview with LizardTech President and CEO, Carlos Domingo, who discusses how Document Express with DjVu benefits the publishing industry.
