From The General Manager

Jim White discusses the recent launch of Express Server 6 and LizardTech’s presence at The 2007 ESRI International Users Conference.

Geospatial Products

As many of you know, LizardTech launched Express Server 6 in June. Express Server 6 allows users on almost any device to access imagery faster, even over low-bandwidth connections, and its interoperability with file systems, Oracle databases, and a variety of client applications means that users aren't restricted to particular data sources and viewing environments.

Of course, while we're enthusiastic about the launch of Express Server 6 and how it will make our customers' jobs easier, we're also excited because Express Server 6 compliments LizardTech's suite of geospatial products in a way that it never has done before. Many of you are familiar with GeoExpress for encoding and manipulating imagery to MrSID and JPEG 2000 formats, and some of you have used our Spatial Express product for storing SID and JP2 imagery in an Oracle Spatial database. But did you know that from within GeoExpress you can choose an Oracle database to output your imagery to? Now you don't need to worry about using command line loading tools or contacting your database administrator for help; instead you can quickly load your imagery into Oracle using the same GeoExpress workflow you're already familiar with.

Further, now that Express Server 6 is available you can serve that imagery you've stored in Oracle without any additional interaction because Express Server 6 talks directly to Spatial Express. You save time because the compressed files are already in SID or JP2 and you don't have to waste days or weeks creating image pyramids, while your users benefit by being able to view large raster images quickly using almost any application.

This combined suite of products makes it easy to compress and manipulate imagery using GeoExpress, store the imagery in an Oracle database using Spatial Express, and serve imagery to WMS, ESRI, and web applications using Express Server. Take a tour of how LizardTech's products can work together to make your job easier by visiting our Express Server demonstration site.

Customer Wins

In June, LizardTech visited San Diego, CA, for The 2007 ESRI International Users Conference. Turnout was excellent and traffic to the LizardTech booth was highlighted by two separate LizardTech contests giving away GPS units. Out of several hundred contestants, Wayne Belzer of The International Boundary and Water Commission won the first GPS, scoring a perfect "10" on the LizardTech Trivia Challenge!

Emmor Nile, of Oregon State's GIS Dept., won the second GPS for his outstanding collection of 31 assorted LizardTech lizards!

Congratulations to both winners! Please check out some great pictures from LizardTech's ESRI UC booth and contests in our Press Gallery.

Tips and Tricks

This is a new segment of our quarterly newsletter. Each quarter we'll offer a practical tidbit about how to perform a certain task or achieve a certain result using one of our software products - a tip or trick you might not be aware of that we hope you'll find useful.

Tip:

Did you know that with a floating license you can access GeoExpress from any computer at any time?

Trick:

Mosaicking color and grayscale images together

So, you would like to mosaic color (3-band) and grayscale (1-band) images? Before doing so, all images in a mosaic must have the same number of bands. In order to work around this, you must do one of the following first:

  • Convert your 3-band (RGB) images to 1-band (grayscale).

    1. Select Add image to encode... from the Project menu
    2. Click More Encode Options
    3. Select the Color Space tab
    4. Select Grayscale for the output color space
    5. Enter OK to exit

  • Convert your 1-band images to 3-band images.

    1. Select Add color composite image to encode... from the Project menu
    2. Add your 1-band file for each band.

Once all of your images have the same number of bands, you may add them to one mosaic.
