LizardTech and Realview Technologies Team Up With North American Publishing Company (NAPCO) to Deliver Magazines Online
Exact Digital Replicas of NAPCO’s Magazines Now Available Online Thanks to LizardTech’s DjVu® Document Format
SEATTLE, Wash. – November 16, 2005 - LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, teamed up with technology partner Realview to transform NAPCO’s hard copy magazines into digital replicas online thanks to LizardTech’s DjVu document format and Realview’s Online Publishing Solution.
With LizardTech’s groundbreaking DjVu technology, originally developed in AT&T Research Labs, readers of magazines such as Printing Impressions, BookTech, E-Gear and other NAPCO print publications will now be able to receive digital replicas of their favorite magazine, with the same layout as the print edition, featuring all the editorial content, colorful images and advertisements. In addition, the digital edition of the magazines will include hyperlinks to Web sites mentioned throughout the magazine giving readers immediate access to additional advertiser offers and information, the latest news and more.
“The Internet has groomed many people to a standard of immediate access to fresh information-a standard that the long lead times and distribution make it increasingly difficult for print publications to meet. That’s why we’re excited to fulfill NAPCO’s desire to provide digital replicas of their magazines to their readers,” said Carlos Domingo, CEO and president of Celartem, Inc. “As the cost of print production and distribution continue to climb, DjVu stands out as the most efficient and cost effective solution for delivering exact digital replicas of print publications such as newspapers and magazines to readers.”
“We are delighted to work with LizardTech and Realview and believe that this cutting-edge digital publication solution will further enhance our products and services for our 300,000 subscribers and 20,000 advertisers,” said Ned Borowsky, president of NAPCO. “As NAPCO’s subscriber base continues to achieve rapid growth, we needed a solution that would enable us to reduce our production and distribution costs without compromising the quality of our magazines. The LizardTech and Realview publishing solution allows us to deliver our publications to our subscribers electronically with all the same characteristics as its printed counterpart.”
The benefits of using LizardTech’s DjVu technology are significant. Publishers are able to convert their current print issues to DjVu format from pre-press PDFs as well as by scanning past print issues, resulting in dramatically small file sizes – anywhere from 10 to 100 times smaller than alternative formats like PDF or JPEG. DjVu digital replicas preserve the stunning visual quality of the print edition and are enhanced with multimedia features like ability to search by keyword within the pages (even within scanned documents thanks to OCR support for over 100 languages), hyperlinks, e-mail addresses, page spills and more. In addition, unlike HTML and online content, distribution of most digital editions can be counted as audited circulation, increasing the publication’s ability to expand its reach nationally or internationally, thereby boosting advertising revenue.
All 14 NAPCO-published magazines will become available in digital form by early 2006. Subscribers to NAPCO’s magazines will receive digital magazines via email each month. Learn more about Document Express with DjVu here. Download the free DjVu Browser Plug-in here.
