LizardTales Newsletter – November 2009
FROM THE MANAGEMENT TEAM
As the weather here in Seattle begins to turn to rain and wind, it’s given us a chance to reflect on what a busy summer it was for LizardTech. In July we launched our brand new LiDAR Compressor product, which provides users with tools to turn giant point cloud datasets into efficient MrSID files. The response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re already working on an updated version that will make the product even better.
Coinciding with the launch of LiDAR Compressor we introduced a new version of our MrSID file format, called MrSID Generation 4, or MG4 for short. As this newsletter is being published, the first applications that support reading these updated MrSID files are being released to the public. Even more of these applications will be released in the coming months, so please visithttp://www.lizardtech.com or subscribe to our product updates feed athttp://www.lizardtech.com/files/rss/updates.xml to keep up with the latest news.
If you’ve attended any of the myriad geospatial conferences over the past few months, you’ve probably seen many LizardTech representatives in attendance. LizardTech exhibited at or attended almost a dozen events over the past few months, so hopefully you got a chance to come meet us and put a face to the names you’ve become familiar with over the years.
As always, thank you so much for your business, and we all look forward to continue working with you closely in the future.
GEOSPATIAL
Much of our focus over the past quarter has been on putting the finishing touches on MrSID Generation 4. This updated format, the first time we’ve updated the MrSID format itself in almost a decade, allows us to add a number of new features to MrSID that our customers have been asking for. Most noticeably so far is support for compression of LiDAR data.
However, that’s not all that MrSID Generation 4 can do. Next year we’ll be releasing a new version of GeoExpress that will introduce some of the new features we’ve been putting into the raster side of MrSID. While details will have to wait until we get closer to release, the things we’re adding to MrSID will provide you with tools to work with even types of imagery, so you’ll be able to use more advanced technologies in an efficient, compressed format.
Finally, we are always eager to hear from you about how we can improve our products. There are numerous ways you can get in touch with us; phone and email are always good, but you can also post on our message boards, respond to our customer surveys, or talk to us in person at tradeshows. We value your opinions and thoughts highly, and your input is the biggest factor determining what new products we build.

Tips and Tricks
Did you know in GeoViewer you can hover your mouse over an item in the viewer window to determine the layer name? This feature is disabled by default, but you can turn it on in UI Preferences:
Options menu – UI Preferences – Layer Boundaries – Check the box labeled “Show layer name tool tip”.
