LizardTales Newsletter – April 2011

FROM MANAGEMENT

At the end of last year, we launched version 8 of our GeoExpress® software and the new raster capabilities of MrSID® Generation 4 (MG4). We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers that the new capabilities of MG4, such as support for hyperspectral data, have made them more efficient. We’re always happy to hear from our customers, and in the next couple of months you’ll have even more opportunities to talk to and interact with us.

First, we’re going to be attending and exhibiting at many trade shows and conferences in April and May. Take a look at our events page at http://www.lizardtech.com/news/events to see when we’ll be in your area, and be sure to stop by to say hi, tell us how you’re using our products, and teach us what we can be doing better.

Next, we’ll be releasing our annual customer survey soon. We’ve conducted a survey yearly since 2008 and your responses have directly shaped our product decisions. Compression support for LiDAR and hyperspectral data were two of the most common requests over the past years, so we’ve added those functions to our products. Be sure to fill out the survey so we can get more great features added to our products.

Finally, LizardTech has been pretty active in the social media space recently. If you’re not aware, you can follow us on both Facebook and Twitter (links here). Post on our Facebook wall and tell us what you’d like to see in GeoExpress or any of our other products.

GEOSPATIAL

MG4‘s a great file format, but a format is really only as good as the applications that support it. Most GIS applications support our older versions of MrSID (Generation 3 and Generation 2), but now vendors need to update their applications to add MG4 support.

To do this, they use our free MrSID Decode SDK 8.0, released earlier this year and available athttp://www.lizardtech.com/developer. This unified SDK supports all versions of the MrSID format, as well as JPEG 2000, and provides easy tools to add support for both formats in 3rd party applications.

The SDK is available for numerous platforms, including Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris. If you’re an application developer, please get the latest SDK to give your customers the format support they need. If you’re an end user, talk to your vendors and make sure they’re aware that you want MG4 support in the next version of their application.

Tips and Tricks

GeoExpress

Do you need to despeckle some MrSID images?
Don’t add them to the images tab; instead add them to the despeckle tab. GeoExpress will process them much faster that way, since it won’t have to decode and reencode the images.

Do you have image files that are used frequently?
You can save on the data cartridge usage by encoding the image to LossLess MrSID first. Now use the lossless MrSID as your starting input image for your future projects. The data cartridge is not used when the input image is in the MrSID format.
