LizardTales Newsletter – September 2011

FROM MANAGEMENT

Fresh into our new fiscal year here at LizardTech® and there is quite a lot going on. We had a wonderful time exhibiting at the 2011 Esri User Conference in July. The amount of booth traffic and interest in our new releases was exceptional. We met a lot of new people and got to see many of you that we haven’t seen in a while. And if you missed the LizardTech reception at Jolt’n Joes, it was the best yet. A good time was had by all! A very big Thank You to all who attended.

I would also like to introduce our new Engineering Manager, Rich Estrin. Rich is a guy who’d rather be developing software products than talking about himself and having his picture taken, but we did get some info out of him so that you’ll have some conversational hooks to engage him with when you start seeing him in the LizardTech booth at trade shows. Rich brings over 17 years of commercial software development experience to LizardTech, with the last twelve years increasingly focused on leading software teams and projects. He has worked with a broad range of technologies and domains from enterprise life science research software to desktop business software. Rich earned a BA in Computer Science from the University of Washington. Look for him next at the GEOINT Symposium in San Antonio, TX, October 16-19th in Booth #263.

On another note, I would like to thank all of you who took part in the annual LizardTech Customer Survey. The response was very positive. The highlight is the use of MG4; we are very pleased to see so many of you using the new format! There were also some very good customer initiated product features that we will be looking at implementing in upcoming versions of our software. Speaking of which, stay tuned, there will be an update to GeoExpress 8 in the coming months.

Thanks again to all of our valued customers for your continued support and patronage.

GEOSPATIAL

The past few months have been an exciting time for us at LizardTech as the number of applications supporting the MrSID® Generation 4 (MG4) format continues to grow. As you may recall, MG4 is the latest version of MrSID and adds support for multispectral data, alpha channels, compression of LiDAR data, improved mosaicking, and other advanced features.

At the Esri International User Conference in San Diego, we released a plug-in that adds support for MG4 to all ArcGIS 10 Desktop products, so now you can work with MG4 images and data the same way you would any other file within ArcGIS 10. For users who aren’t yet on the latest version of ArcGIS, we also released a plug-in for 9.3 just last week, so now the vast majority of Esri users have access to MG4 data.

Additionally, we released the latest version of our Express Server® image serving software at the end of June. Express Server 7 adds support for serving MG4™ data via WMS and other methods. Of course, it integrates with all of the other major server and desktop products as well, so distributing your MG4 images is now easier than ever. Additionally, Express Server 7 is a full 64-bit application so you can take advantage of performance improvements.

Stay tuned in the coming months for more developments with MG4!

These compressed files enable us to efficiently store and quickly transfer vast amounts of data within an office or across the World Wide Web. As geospatial data are widely used throughout the world and their demand continues to rise, companies are releasing software with advanced data compression capabilities. Ms. Hays and Mr. Young will introduce MrSID Generation 4 (MG4), the next stage in the evolution of LizardTech’s MrSID image compression format.
