LizardTech is celebrating 20 Years in business this year! Back in 1992, LizardTech was founded from technologies created by Los Alamos National Laboratory, technologies that evolved into what is known today as MG4 (MrSID Generation 4). I am sure there are some customers that still remember the LizardTech dongle for GeoExpress 1.5! Over these 20 years, we have added quite a lot of functionality and features and today, with the latest version of GeoExpress 8.5, you can compress multi- and hyperspectral data and specify a compression ratio for each band or group of bands. You can see the progression of features over time here:

Of course, GeoExpress is only part of the story. Our Express Server software for delivering large images over networks has a similar history of features added and improvements made as we’ve heard from our users about what they need. Sometimes what our users have asked for – and what we’ve provided – are whole new products, such as LiDAR Compressor for compressing giant point cloud datasets to convenient MrSID files and the recently released GeoViewer for iPad.
But the foundation of our success has been the MrSID format, and to celebrate the 20thanniversary of MrSID, we will be hosting MrSID-related events and contests throughout the year. Check out the anniversary page here:

Twenty years of MrSID means 20 years of innovation and change. Would you like to learn more about how MrSID compresses imagery? Maybe you’d like to understand how MrSID quickly decodes scenes from large datasets. Or perhaps you’d just like a recap of how the file format has changed over the past two decades or how to best use MrSID in both LizardTech’s and our partners’ products.
LizardTech offers many different educational resources to help you. First, we have an in-depth white paper on the MrSID format available here. This white paper describes the MrSID compression technology and how MrSID files are structured.
Additionally, we have webinars every two weeks that cover a variety of topics, from the MrSID format to GeoExpress to how LizardTech’s products work with your applications. During these webinars, LizardTech experts are available to answer any questions you may have. Check out our webinars page to find out when the next one is. We also have a best practices guide for GeoExpress 8.5 available here that will walk you through, step by step, the best way to optimize your workflows when creating and editing MrSID images. Whether you only need compression or whether you want to mosaic, reproject, color balance, and crop a dataset, GeoExpress 8.5 Best Practices will give you the guidance you need.

Tips and Tricks
In GeoViewer and GeoExpress, you can preview different combinations of bands using the Band Selector tool. You can preview individual bands selecting the Grayscale radio button, and even view the alpha band.
