LizardTales Newsletter – February 2013

FROM MANAGEMENT

Happy New Year and welcome to 2013. It is hard to believe that January has already passed us by. Before we look ahead I want to take a moment to look back at 2012. We had an incredible year here at LizardTech®. First of all as most of you know it was the 20-year anniversary of the MrSID® format. We all had a great time celebrating with all of our customers and partners throughout the year. Thanks to all of you who have helped make MrSID the standard for image compression.

We also released some updates to our software including a major revision of Express Server® software. For all of those who have been using the product prior to this release and have requested a graphical user interface (GUI), we developed one for Express Server 8 and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We also released LizardTech GeoViewer for iOS (two versions – the original in January, 2012, and an updated version in December) and we finished up GeoViewer for Android for release in the first weeks of the new year. Each is available for free at its online store (visit iTunes or Google Play).

We are looking forward to the new year and are busy working on an update to our GeoExpress® software, which we are extremely excited about and are sure you will be too. We partnered with GeoWorld magazine in January on an article and a webinar about the size of LiDAR data and what the industry is doing to solve the growing challenges. Make sure to check out the article here. The webinar is archived here.

Have a great 2013! We look forward to seeing all of you out on the road this year. The first round of our show schedule is posted below.

Best Regards,

LizardTech Management

GEOSPATIAL

WMS in the mobile app world

As you saw above, in late 2012 we released an updated version of LizardTech GeoViewer for Apple iOS devices. Our previous version of GeoViewer only supported iPad. Now, GeoViewer supports the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

While the main goal of the release was to add support for the iPhone and iPod Touch, we also decided it was time to address something that had been bothering us: viewing data on mobile devices from WMS services was a pain! We’ve used a variety of different applications on our own phones in the past, and we found that none of them performed well. When you do get connected to a server (which can be an ordeal in itself), the results tend to be problematic. The images weren’t available in the formats we wanted, they were slow to transfer, and sometimes the applications wouldn’t be able to retrieve any data at all!

With the new release of GeoViewer, we’ve added support for WMS servers, and we’ve done it right. It’s fast, it’s reliable, and it’s easy to use. You can try it yourself for free by adding data from LizardTech’s demo WMS Express Server at demo.lizardtech.com. And using the in-app purchase functionality of the iTunes Store, you unlock support for all WMS servers for $4.99USD. Give it a try!

TIPS AND TRICKS

Express Server 8 will automatically recognize the coordinate reference system of your images if that information can be found in the metadata.

For those MrSID files that do not have a coordinate reference system defined in the metadata, you can use GeoExpress to define one without reencoding by adding your images to the Metadata tab.
