FROM MANAGEMENT

Dear Customers and Partners,

The summer got underway with a busy schedule starting with the Esri International User Conference in San Diego. All of us here had a great time, enjoyed meeting new people and caught up with our long time customers and partners. Our customers and partners especially enjoyed the annual LizardTech reception, which has grown into a tradition over the years. This year the reception was held at the Western Metal Rooftop at Petco Park and we enjoyed a great game on a perfect night as the hometown Padres took on the Colorado Rockies.

Padres vs Rockies

Final score: Padres 2 – Rockies 1

The highlight of the show for us was the release of the latest version of our flagship product, GeoExpress 9. The newest release now offers multi-core support and a speed increase of 400%! If you are under current maintenance, you should have received your upgrade information. If you are not and would like to know how you can get the latest version, please contact any member of our sales team.

As always, we thank all of you for your continued loyalty and support. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you out on the road this year.

Best Regards,

LizardTech Management

GEOSPATIAL

July was a momentous month for LizardTech. We exhibited at our biggest trade show of the year, the Esri International User Conference, where we met lots of new people and reconnected with many of our existing customers. We threw a fantastic party in honor of our customers at the baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies, and everyone we talked to had a great time.

The biggest news for us in July, however, was the launch of GeoExpress 9. Long used as the prime tool for creating and manipulating MrSID images, GeoExpress 9 is four times faster than previous versions thanks to support for distributing jobs across multiple cores and processors. Now you can run multiple jobs on multiple CPUs, so encoding, mosaicking, color balancing, and more are faster than ever.

Additionally, we added support for Intelligent Encoding. Previous versions of GeoExpress required you to choose up front whether you were performing a new encode, an optimization, or an update. While these options could give you better performance, they required some expertise to configure. By talking to our customers, we realized that most people weren’t taking full advantage of these features. With Intelligent Encoding, GeoExpress now automatically reconfigures itself to give you the best performance. Now there’s no need to worry about whether you need to optimize or update an image; just choose the tasks you want to perform and GeoExpress will give you the maximum throughput.

Customers who are current on their support contract should have received the upgrade information. If not, please contact a member of our sales team. For those who are interested in trying GeoExpress, head to http://www.lizardtech.com/downloads/category/#free_trials and download a free 30 day trial.

TIPS AND TRICKS

GeoExpress 9 now takes advantage of the multiple processors your hardware has to offer. You can adjust how many processing jobs GeoExpress 9 runs at the same time (Concurrent Jobs), or how many processors each job will use (Total Threads). These settings are found under Options -> Preferences. For optimal performance, we suggest you leave these settings at their default level.

If you are processing a lot of existing MG3, MG2, or JPEG 2000 files and need to keep the files in the same format rather than upgrade to MG4, the following tip will save you a lot of time:

  1. Before you add your images to GeoExpress, go to Options > Preferences > General tab.
  2. Under the heading “Default output file format”, check the “Same as input (MrSID and JP2 only)” option.
