Fifth Graders Get a Lesson in Geography from LizardTech

"Company Visits Brighton School on GIS Day"

On Wednesday, November 14 LizardTech participated in GIS Day by visiting fifth graders at Brighton School for a presentation about geography and geographic information systems (GIS). The focus of the presentation was geography and the role it plays in everybody’s daily lives. Additionally, the evolution of technology and its impact on geographic information systems was examined in light of the students’ current study of the American Revolutionary War. John Ruffing, Genie Hays and David Calabro were the representatives who displayed Revolutionary War era maps of the 13 original colonies, while quizzing the students and challenging them to identify the difficulties in map creation during that time period. The students were also presented with maps of Philadelphia created in 1776 alongside with present day maps of Philadelphia which were obtained from The Library of Congress.

In this article, Jason De Leon, a field designer in Enbridge's Pampa office outside of Amarillo says that the biggest benefit of having GeoExpress is that it saves his field workers time, "Having all the image and map data they need for a job in the palm of their hand saves field workers hours and hours on the road. "Historical Map Preservation"

In the September 2007 issue of GeoConnexion, Alistair Maclenan, LizardTech’s sales manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, looks at the efforts of the State Archive of Rome (ASRoma) to preserve tens of thousands of historical maps, registries, and other documents using LizardTech software.

Using GeoExpress, the Archive successfully converted over 130,000 historical maps and documents into the ISO standard JPEG 2000 format, allowing them to reduce storage requirements by 95% while retaining excellent visual fidelity. These were then catalogued for efficient online publishing using LizardTech’s Express Server software, enabling ASRoma’s five thousand registered users to quickly access Rome’s history online at any time of day.
