LizardTech Announces Integration with OracleŽ Spatial 10g GeoRaster

SEATTLE, Wash. -March 9, 2005 - LizardTech, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions that make it significantly easier to manage and distribute digital content, today announced that it is working with Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) to extend the OracleŽ Spatial 10g GeoRaster architecture to integrate native MrSID technology. GeoExpress with MrSID is powerful wavelet-based software that enables users to manage, access and distribute massive geospatial imagery such as aerial photos and satellite images.

This venture represents LizardTech's first step toward providing JPEG 2000 support for Oracle Spatial 10g in the future. LizardTech is working with Oracle through its Partner membership in the Oracle PartnerNetwork.

Both companies are working closely together in order to extend each organization's ability to deliver to enterprise customers a geospatial solution that will benefit both the technical and the non-technical user to help improve efficiency and reduce the cost of storing and retrieving massive image files.

"Our goal is to provide the most robust tools for managing, accessing and distributing massive geospatial imagery by enabling our customers to leverage Oracle Spatial 10g technology," said Carlos Domingo, president and chief executive officer, LizardTech. "With Oracle's industry leading database technology and LizardTech wavelet imaging expertise, it's a significant win for enterprise customers who need a solution for storing and distributing large raster data sets."

Several key advantages are achieved by integrating LizardTech's native MrSID wavelet technology in Oracle Spatial 10g.

  • Reduced storage costs: Database size is greatly reduced (20 to 30 times depending on the compression ratio used) without introducing artifacts into the imagery. This reduction in database size results in reduced storage costs.

  • Improved performance: Fast loading of existing MrSID data into Oracle Spatial 10g increases productivity for users receiving their data in MrSID format. Additionally, very fast retrieval of image data is realized due to efficiencies inherent in wavelet properties.

  • Enterprise-wide integration: Unprecedented decision support is achieved when a single geospatial data repository manages all mission-critical data - raster, vector, and relational.

Furthermore, Oracle Spatial 10g customers will not need to modify their existing applications; rather, the GeoRaster API will support direct access to MrSID imagery.

LizardTech has long been an industry leader in developing technology for managing and distributing large raster data, such as aerial and satellite imagery, giving decision-makers access to rich information that otherwise would be too costly to obtain. Oracle Spatial 10g provides the tools and technologies required to build enterprise class solutions that enable organizations to capitalize on all their spatial data resources. LizardTech's flexible wavelet-based technology adds substantial value in the Oracle 10g environment that can greatly benefit government and non-government organizations alike. The new Oracle Spatial 10g GeoRaster API will provide a plug-in architecture to support partner compression technologies. LizardTech will supply the module that will enable that API for loading and retrieving MrSID data natively to and from Oracle Spatial 10g.
