LizardTech Enables The New Yorker Magazine to Deliver 80 Years of Memories on DVD

LizardTech's DjVuŽ Document Format Provides Technology Solution for Converting More than 4,000 Issues into Electronic Format.

SEATTLE, Wash. - September 20, 2005 - LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc., and a leading provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content today announced DjVu technology was chosen by The New Yorker magazine to capture and compress 80 years of issues on just eight DVDs. The project consisted of processing more than half a million color scans, which resulted in highly compressed files that have far better image quality than JPEG.

Thanks to LizardTech's groundbreaking DjVu technology, which was developed in AT&T Research Labs, more than 4,000 New Yorker Magazine issues are available in a collection of eight DVDs titled "The Complete New Yorker." The issues, which had been electronically scanned, were processed into LizardTech's DjVu file format, resulting in dramatically smaller electronic page images. DjVu digital replicas preserve the stunning visual quality of the print edition. The pages are read in The New Yorker's custom-made page viewer, which incorporates LizardTech's patented decoder software.

"We're thrilled that The New Yorker magazine saw our DjVu technology as the best solution for efficiently delivering more than 80 years of captivating stories, cartoons, and stunning images to those who are so fond of the magazine," said Carlos Domingo, CEO and president of Celartem, Inc. "Articles by the finest writers of the 20th century and the countless unforgettable cartoons in their original visual context of the printed version will be treasured by lovers of literature around the world."

"After extensive research, the only compression software we found that retained the beauty of The New Yorker's illustrations, cartoons, and covers without distortion was the DjVu technology. In particular, the DjVu technology brilliantly compresses text without any loss of quality at greatly reduced file sizes. We could not have had even close to the product we have without LizardTech's technology," said The New Yorker's Edward Klaris.

The "Complete New Yorker" is immediately available for a suggested retail price of $100 in stores nationwide. Learn more about Document Express with DjVu here. Download the free DjVu Browser Plug-in here.
