System Requirements
Installation & Compatibility Guide | July 2026
LizardTech, a GeoWGS84 Geospatial Solutions company
This document describes the minimum and recommended system requirements for installing and running LizardTech GeoViewer 10.0.1 on Windows. Read this document before installing GeoViewer to verify that your computer meets the listed operating system, hardware, and software requirements.
For a summary of the new features and bug fixes that are included in this release, see the companion document: GeoViewer 10.0.1 What's New & Bug Fixes.
1. Operating System Requirements
GeoViewer 10.0.1 is a 64-bit Windows desktop application. It is supported on the following 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows:
-
Windows 10 (64-bit, version 1809 or later)
-
Windows 11 (64-bit, all currently supported builds)
-
Windows Server 2019 (64-bit)
-
Windows Server 2022 (64-bit)
IMPORTANT: 32-bit versions of Windows are no longer supported. Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2016 are outside Microsoft mainstream support and are not certified for GeoViewer 10.0.1. GeoViewer may still install on these systems, but defects reported against them will not be addressed.
Display & desktop session
-
1280 x 800 minimum display resolution; 1920 x 1080 or higher recommended.
-
Standard (96 DPI) or High-DPI scaling supported.
-
Local interactive desktop session required (Remote Desktop is supported, but a hardware-accelerated GPU is recommended for LiDAR 3D viewing).
2. Hardware Requirements
Recommended (best experience)
For optimal performance, especially when working with large imagery or LiDAR point clouds, the following hardware configuration is recommended:
Minimum (still supported)
GeoViewer will still run on lower-specification hardware that meets the following minimum requirements:
3. Software Requirements
On Windows, GeoViewer 10.0.1 requires the following runtime components. The GeoViewer installer detects whether each component is already present and downloads and installs the missing ones automatically.
Privileges required for installation
-
All-users install: administrator privileges are required. Run setup.exe from an elevated session.
-
Per-user install: standard user privileges are sufficient; the application is installed under the current user's profile and does not appear for other users on the same computer.
Network and security
-
Outbound HTTPS (TCP/443) access is required to consume secure WMS and Express Server imagery and to use the location-search (geocoding) service.
-
If your organisation uses an HTTPS-inspecting proxy, the proxy's CA certificate must be trusted by the Windows certificate store on the workstation.
-
No inbound ports are required; GeoViewer does not act as a server.
4. Updated Library Stack (Reference)
GeoViewer 10.0.1 has been rebuilt against newer versions of the underlying geospatial libraries. This is reference information for administrators and integrators; the libraries are bundled with GeoViewer and do not need to be installed separately.
5. Supported File Formats
Raster formats
-
MrSID (MG2, MG3, MG4)
-
JPEG 2000 (JP2, J2K) including GMLJP2
-
NITF
-
GeoTIFF / TIFF
-
ECW (via bundled NCSEcw decoder)
-
CADRG
-
PNG
-
BMP, JPEG (display only)
LiDAR formats
-
MrSID MG4 LiDAR
-
LAS (ASPRS 1.0 through 1.4)
-
LAZ (compressed LAS, via updated LAStools)
Vector and auxiliary formats
-
ESRI Shapefile (.shp / .shx / .dbf)
-
ESRI World files (.tfw, .jgw, .pgw, etc.)
-
Auxiliary metadata files (.aux.xml)
Remote services
-
WMS (latest WMS protocol, HTTP and HTTPS)
-
JPIP (JPEG 2000 streaming)
-
LizardTech Express Server (image and JPIP catalogues)
-
OpenStreetMap basemap tiles
6. Installation Notes
To install GeoViewer, run setup.exe located in the parent directory of the installation media. You can install GeoViewer for the current user only, or for all users of the computer. If you want to install GeoViewer for all users, run setup.exe with administrator privileges.
The installation process creates a shortcut in the LizardTech directory of the Windows Start Menu. By default GeoViewer is installed under C:\Program Files\LizardTech\GeoViewer\ for all-users installs, or under %LocalAppData%\Programs\LizardTech\GeoViewer\ for per-user installs.
Silent / unattended installation
For deployment across multiple workstations, setup.exe accepts the standard MSI command-line switches:
setup.exe /S /v"/qn ALLUSERS=1" # silent, all users
setup.exe /S /v"/qn ALLUSERS=""" # silent, current user
Upgrading from earlier versions
GeoViewer 10.0.1 will upgrade an existing GeoViewer 9.x or 10.0.0 installation in place. User preferences, recent project files, and bookmarks are preserved. No separate uninstall step is required.
Licensing
GeoViewer is distributed in two editions:
-
GeoViewer - free edition; viewing, basic export, and auxiliary file support.
-
GeoViewer Pro - paid edition; adds printing, area measurement, location search (geocoding), tiled image export, and access to additional projections.
GeoViewer Pro features are unlocked by entering a valid GeoViewer Pro serial number in Help > License. The same installer is used for both editions.
7. Troubleshooting Installation
.NET Framework 4.8 fails to install
On a system that has had .NET Framework updates removed via Windows Update Cleanup, the 4.8 installer may fail with error 0x80070643. Run Windows Update first to apply outstanding service-stack updates, then re-run the GeoViewer installer.
Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable fails to install
If a previous Visual C++ Redistributable installation is in a broken state, uninstall any "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable" entries from Settings > Apps & features, then re-run the GeoViewer installer. The installer will fetch and install a fresh copy from Microsoft.
LiDAR 3D view is blank or shows a software-rendering banner
This indicates that DirectX 9 or the SlimDX runtime is not available on the computer, or that the graphics driver does not expose Direct3D 9. Install the latest GPU driver from the vendor (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel), then re-launch GeoViewer.
Cannot connect to a secure WMS service
Verify that the workstation trusts the WMS server's TLS certificate (and your proxy's CA certificate, if applicable). GeoViewer 10.0.1 uses the Windows certificate store; certificates installed only into Firefox or third-party browsers will not be picked up.
Where to get more help
If you encounter an issue that is not covered above, contact LizardTech Customer Support and include:
-
GeoViewer version (Help > About).
-
Windows version and bitness (winver).
-
A short description of the problem and exact error text.
-
If applicable, a sample file that reproduces the problem.
